The MacBook is smart enough to stop charging once it reaches 100%. There is no way you can damage it by leaving it plugged in longer than it needs to charge.Written by cavemonkey50 @Apple Discussions.
You should also be aware that the MacBook won't charge the battery if the charge when plugged in is over 95%. This is also a protection in place to prevent overcharging.
As far your MacBook not booting the second time, it sounds like it's a different issue. I know a whole bunch of other people have had issues with their MacBook not turning back on. The battery is not the culprit.
Therefore, I can leave my charger plugged on without worrying that my Macbook's battery would be affected. Yipee!
